Maverick Weller (Mav) plays with St Kilda in the AFL. After being drafted to Gold Coast Suns as a 17 year old, this year he has made the move to St Kilda with flying colours. Although the team is in a “building phase”, Mav has had some decent performances and some memorable moments (did you see the 3 secs he played at the start of a game against Collingwood before being knocked out ? OUCH!) Apparently he gets his amazing good looks, strong body and determination from his Aunty (LOLOLOLOL)….HH had a chance to Take 5 with Mav recently.
What’s your favorite exercise?
Apart from the obvious, I find boxing really helpful with my sport. It demonstrates similar traits to footy and I really enjoy it. Since I was a boy I’ve always like competing. Being one of three brothers I had to ‘fight’ for what I wanted at a young age. It definitely developed my competitive edge and has instilled a thirst for a ‘contest’ in Australian rules.
What has been your biggest health/fitness/sport challenge?
Aussie rules is a game with many different fitness demographics. Tall, short, quick, strong, nimble, leaping ability, ground work, etc. My strengths – strength, speed, endurance and competiveness. I pride myself of the ‘contest’ the combative side of the game and for me to be able to do that I need to be strong, powerful, quick and be able to do it for the full 120mins. My biggest challenge would of been speed-endurance being able to keep my high end efforts up for the full game. It has now become a strength.
What Motivates you?
My motivation is to become an elite midfielder in the competition and to win a premiership. I also have leadership aspirations.
What’s your best health/fitness tip?
My tip for anyone who wants to get fit is “you are what you eat!” Why train your butt off when your just going to replace it with shit food. Get the most out of your training. Three weeks to create a habit, three days to lose it!
What’s your biggest achievement in health/fitness/sport?
My biggest achievement would be to play AFL and to be drafted from Tassie. With plenty more to come!
